Rochester, NY Wedding - Rochester Museum & Science Center Reception - Susan & Ryan

I first met Susan over a decade ago. We didn't get to hang out a ton in the years in-between, but I got to take pictures for her during an important event years ago, and we stayed in touch ever since.

I was thrilled when I got to sit down and hear her and Ryan's story, and even more happy when they wanted me to photograph their wedding! They have a deep care and respect for each other, and I can see the mutual trust they’ve built out of countless hours of honest and vulnerable conversations. I love how unselfishly they choose and care for each other, and it was so meaningful for me to get to be part of their wedding day.

They got married at their church, Artisan Church, in the heart of Rochester. I was a little nervous about traffic with the Lilac Festival happening that weekend just around the corner, but I think the iffy weather held people off - and it turned out to barely rain at all!

Their reception was at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. Ryan and Susan met while working at Strong Memorial Hospital, and they both have a love for science. Their venues were a perfect blend of their values: the church community they’re committed to, and a celebration of science (with a touch of nerdiness)! :-)

There were a ton of thoughtful details throughout the day. The ones that stood out to me the most were Susan’s celebrations of her mom, who passed away a number of years ago. Susan carried her mom’s wedding picture in a pendant on her bouquet, and she stitched lace from her mother’s wedding gown onto the hem of her own dress.

Susan also chose handmade jewelry, crafted by a friend of hers, for bridesmaids’ gifts. And Ryan and Susan honored their Scottish heritage with a Celtic handfasting ceremony - and by going to Scotland for their honeymoon!!
